About

The Why

Liam Walsh

I created ForBothOfUs because I started seeing how our government and legal systems weren't keeping women and mothers safe from financial insecurity when they exit relationships involving children.

It broke, and still breaks my heart, to meet, see and hear from women who gave up their careers to look after children, only to find the intimate contract they entered into isn't actually able to be upheld by law.

Whether it be a marriage or any other form of partnership commitment, if one partner puts their career on hold for an extended period, they should not have to live with that decision alone if they break up.

I am an ex-media and technology executive, having worked with Facebook, Microsoft, Fairfax, and others. More recently, I published a satirical book on corporate dysfunction, called The Corporate Charade. I am also finalising a book on male casual sexism called Denihilism, about how men deny the harm we do to women to make our own lives easier.

My goal is simple: get a Separation Income Guarantee created and institutionalised, so that primary caregivers can relax after decades of child raising. This seems a bare minimum for people who give up so much to raise and support children.

If you would like to advocate for this, it's the major superannuation funds and retail banks that have all the infrastructure, capital, and integrations to make this real. You will probably find yours in our Advocate section of this site.

I also want to say thank you to my partner, for stepping back or for stepping up, whatever our family needed. That deserves to be recognised with a secure future, not just gratitude.

Thank you and may your future be secure.
